One of the first things that I’ll research when visiting a new place is ‘where can I go to get the best view’? Ideally somewhere that overlooks the entire city and will offer the best view at sunset. More often then not, that place will be a rooftop bar. What better way to really take in a city in all its glory then with a cocktail in hand? Here’s our round up of some of the world’s best rooftop bars, offering views and drinks aplenty.
Rock Bar, Bali
Set along Jimbaran’s pristine coast, Rock Bar Bali is a locals and tourist hotspot, offering some of the best sunset views. Perched on a rock 14 metres above the Indian Ocean, it offers sunset vibes and after-dark ambiance. With some ‘Rock Stars’ drinks and ‘Rock Favourites’ the beverage menu is expanse, paired delightfully with a tapas menu featuring summer rolls, wedges and traditional Balinese dishes with a twist.

A picture will tell a thousand words and this has never been more true for this one. Imagine capturing all the city lights and the hustle and bustle that is Bangkok from atop a 61 story building. Baba Nest at Sri Panwa, Phuket, Thailand
Another favourite hailing from Thailand is the Baba Nest at Sri Panwa in Phuket. This is actually a floating bar perched in the centre of an infinity pool on a mountaintop – What more could you want?! Cozy, comfortable and serving Sri-jitos – Sri Panwa’s signature cocktail, a twist on the mojito featuring lemongrass-infused Belvedere vodka, lemongrass tea, fresh lime, and mint.

The Roof, Public Hotel, New York
This list would not be complete without some New York favourites thrown in. New York itself has arguably one of the best city skylines in the world, so we’d be remiss if we didn’t include some of the city’s top picks. The Roof at Public Hotel in New York goes from vibrant terrace in the day, to sleek party spot at night. Offering some of the best views of the city, visit at sunset to picturesque moments lounge-side.

Perched 120 feet above Market St in San Francisco sits Charmaines Rooftop Bar & Lounge, a European Terraces meets laid back California groove. A menu of bespoke cocktails suits every taste – try ‘Let me touch your mind’ – Banks 5 rum, coconut cream, pineapple and lime, served on crushed ice and topped with a Negroni.

Perch, Los Angeles
The table setting and menu might scream French but the skyline is undoubtedly LA. This French themed bistro is aptly named – it literally is perched 16 floors up, offering 360 degree views of the city. Sip on Parisian inspired cocktails whilst taking in the breath taking views of the city.

The Rooftop, Charleston, South Carolina
The Vendue Hotel hides one of South Carolina’s best rooftop bars – aptly named ‘The Rooftop’. This iconic venue offers up live music every Sunday from March til October, serving up some pretty impressive drinks like the ‘Blueberry Breeze’ – an intoxicating mix of Naked Turtle Rum, Blueberry Puree, San Pellegrino Lemonata, Fresh Mint and Club Soda.

The Rooftop, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Not to be confused with ‘The Rooftop’ in South Carolina, this one stands on it’s own in Mexico and is the only rooftop bar in Cabo San Lucas. So whilst you’re not spoilt for choice in the city, you really only need this option! Looking out at the Sea of Cortez, El Arco and the surrounding city, The Rooftop sits atop The Cape, A Thompson Hotel and offers live music and handcrafted cocktails.

Jimmy at the James Rooftop
It’s easy to see why Jimmy at the James is a New York favourite – what’s not to love about a pool pared back with some cocktails at sunset? With panoramic views of midtown New York and no cover charge in the evenings (you need to be a guest of the hotel to access the pool during the day), it’s a no brainer. Oh, and cocktails might be on the pricey side but when they’re serving up delights like the ‘Salty Dog’ (Hendricks Gin, St Germain, Lavender Bitters and Grapefruit), it’s worth every penny.

Ivy Pool, Sydney
A homegrown favourite, the Ivy Pool in Sydney has gained a reputation as the place you take visitors, because it is, well, quite remarkable. A quick look at this place and you’ll be impressed – the pool, the décor and the service all fair up to make a stand out spot in Sydney.
